Netdata

Netdata is an open source, distributed monitoring solution designed to provide high-resolution, real-time visibility into the performance and health of servers, containers, virtual machines, and cloud environments. With a lightweight agent that installs in seconds and a zero-configuration philosophy, Netdata makes comprehensive infrastructure monitoring accessible to teams of any size.

The agent architecture of Netdata is one of its most distinctive features. Unlike centralized monitoring systems that require shipping all metrics to a central server for storage and analysis, the Netdata agent runs on each monitored host and performs real-time analysis and alerting locally. This distributed approach means that insights are available immediately without network round-trips, and monitoring continues even when central infrastructure is unavailable.

Netdata's metric collection capabilities are extraordinarily broad. The agent automatically detects and collects metrics from running services and applications without manual configuration. Collectors are available for dozens of system components including CPU, memory, disk I/O, network interfaces, file systems, interrupts, and kernel activity. Application-specific collectors cover web servers (Nginx, Apache, Lighttpd), databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL, Redis, MongoDB), message queues (Kafka, RabbitMQ), web application frameworks, system daemons, Docker containers, Kubernetes pods, and many more.

The per-second, high-resolution metrics collection is a hallmark of Netdata. While many monitoring tools collect metrics at one-minute or longer intervals, Netdata collects data every second by default. This high resolution is critical for identifying and diagnosing transient performance issues that would be invisible at lower collection frequencies. The Netdata agent stores these high-resolution metrics locally using a tiered, compressed storage engine that is designed for minimal disk footprint and CPU overhead.

Netdata's alerting system includes hundreds of pre-configured, algorithmically tuned alert templates that cover common failure patterns for all the metrics Netdata collects. These alerts are active out of the box and do not require manual configuration, providing immediate warning capability for memory exhaustion, CPU saturation, disk space consumption, network bandwidth, service failures, and many other critical conditions. Custom alerts can be defined using a straightforward configuration syntax.

Netdata Cloud is the centralized management layer that aggregates data from distributed Netdata agents into a unified dashboard. Teams can monitor all their nodes from a single interface, drill down into specific hosts, configure alert routing, and collaborate on incident investigation. Netdata Cloud supports user management with roles and team-level permissions.

The Machine Learning capabilities in Netdata include anomaly detection that runs continuously on all collected metrics using time-series-specific algorithms. The Netdata Anomaly Advisor uses these scores to highlight unusual patterns across the entire infrastructure, helping teams identify emerging problems before they escalate.

Netdata integrates with external notification channels including Slack, PagerDuty, OpsGenie, Twilio, Telegram, email, and many others. It also integrates with Prometheus, Graphite, OpenTSDB, and InfluxDB as metric export destinations for teams that use these systems as long-term storage.
