Plane

Plane is an open source project management platform designed for software teams that want a powerful, flexible alternative to tools like Jira, Linear, and Asana, with the added benefit of being fully self-hostable. Built with modern web technologies, Plane provides a clean, fast interface for tracking issues, managing sprints, building roadmaps, and collaborating on projects without the complexity and licensing costs of enterprise project management suites.

At the heart of Plane is the Issues system. Issues are the fundamental unit of work in Plane, representing tasks, bugs, feature requests, and any other actionable items. Each issue supports a rich set of attributes including priority, status, assignees, due date, estimates, labels, and custom properties defined by the user. Issues can be organized in cycles (sprints), grouped under modules (epics), and linked to each other to express dependencies and relationships.

The multiple view types in Plane allow team members to interact with issues in the way that best suits their workflow. The Board view provides a Kanban-style column layout where issues are organized by status and can be dragged between columns. The List view displays issues in a flat, filterable table that is ideal for reviewing large backlogs. The Spreadsheet view adds a more data-dense tabular interface with inline editing. The Gantt chart view visualizes issue timelines and dependencies, making it useful for planning and scheduling work over longer time horizons. The Calendar view organizes issues by due date.

Cycles in Plane are time-boxed sprints that allow teams to plan and execute work in structured iterations. Modules serve as a higher-level grouping mechanism for organizing related issues under a common theme or epic. Both cycles and modules have their own progress tracking dashboards showing completion rates, issue distribution by priority, and velocity metrics.

The Roadmap feature in Plane allows product teams to visualize the long-term plan for a project on a timeline. Modules and cycles can be placed on the roadmap, providing a high-level view of what is planned for upcoming quarters without the noise of individual issue details.

Pages in Plane provide a rich text editor for meeting notes, technical specifications, and documentation that can be linked to issues and projects. The editor supports standard formatting, code blocks, embedded tables, and other rich content elements.

Plane's permission system allows workspace administrators to configure member roles with different levels of access at the workspace, project, and issue levels. Guest access, viewer access, member access, and admin access enable teams to collaborate with external stakeholders without exposing sensitive project details.

Plane can be self-hosted using Docker Compose and is available with both a community edition and a professional edition with additional features. The managed Plane Cloud service provides a hosted option for teams that prefer not to manage their own infrastructure. The open source codebase is actively maintained with regular releases that add new features and improvements.
