HVTools
VerifiedOpen SourceThe RVTools Alternative for Hyper-V & Azure Local
hvtools.appLast updated: April 2026
HVTools is a free, open-source Windows desktop application for managing and monitoring Hyper-V environments — standalone hosts, clusters, and Azure Local — with a clean GUI.
About
HVTools is a free, open-source GUI application built to give IT administrators a complete overview of their Hyper-V virtual infrastructure.
It connects to standalone Hyper-V hosts, remote servers, Windows Failover Clusters, and Azure Local (formerly Azure Stack HCI) to provide centralized visibility into VMs, disks, checkpoints, and host configurations.
Think of it as what RVTools is for VMware — but for Hyper-V. No license fees. No telemetry. No cloud dependency.
Positioning
HVTools fills a gap that has existed in the Hyper-V ecosystem for years: a simple, lightweight tool that lets you see everything across your virtual infrastructure without opening 15 different consoles.
Where VMware admins have had RVTools for inventory and reporting, Hyper-V admins were left juggling Hyper-V Manager, Failover Cluster Manager, and PowerShell scripts stitched together with hope.
HVTools is built by Michael Morten Sonne, a Microsoft MVP, and designed for the sysadmins and infrastructure engineers who actually run these environments day to day.
What You Get
- VM Overview — Full configuration visibility: CPU, memory, disk, network, generation, integration services, and uptime across all connected hosts
- VM Groups — Organize VMs into logical groups for bulk operations like start, stop, and backup job management
- Checkpoint Management — View all checkpoints across the environment with age tracking, storage consumption, and parent-child hierarchy
- Cluster Support — Node health monitoring, HA VM distribution, cluster networks, shared volumes, and failover priority configuration
- Host Information — Hardware specs, OS version, licensing status, boot time, network adapters, and Hyper-V configuration paths
- Virtual Disk Inventory — Disk type classification, format identification, fragmentation monitoring, QoS tracking, and differencing disk relationships
- Export & Reporting — Export to JSON, CSV, XML, or formatted text with selective VM export and full metadata
Core Areas
Hyper-V Management
Centralized view of all VMs with state monitoring, color-coded indicators, and integration services tracking. Supports both Generation 1 and Generation 2 virtual machines.
Cluster & Azure Local
Full cluster awareness with node status, highly available VM tracking, shared volume info, and multi-node parallel data collection.
Storage & Disk Analysis
Complete virtual disk inventory with type classification (Dynamic, Fixed, Differencing, PassThrough), IOPS QoS settings, and storage efficiency analysis.
Checkpoint Hygiene
Intelligent recommendations for checkpoint cleanup, age tracking, and storage consumption monitoring to prevent checkpoint sprawl.
Reporting & Export
Multiple export formats for documentation, audits, and capacity planning. Selective export with timestamp and user metadata.
Why It Matters
Hyper-V admins have been underserved by tooling for years. Microsoft provides Hyper-V Manager and System Center, but one is too basic and the other is too heavy. Most teams end up writing custom PowerShell scripts to get the visibility they need.
HVTools gives you a single pane of glass without the overhead of a full management suite. It is free, open-source under the MIT license, and built by someone who actually manages these environments.
For organizations running Azure Local or Windows Failover Clusters, HVTools provides the kind of at-a-glance infrastructure overview that makes capacity planning, troubleshooting, and audits significantly faster. No agents to deploy, no cloud account required, no subscription fees.
