Metabase

Metabase is an open source business intelligence (BI) and analytics platform designed to make data accessible to everyone in an organization, regardless of their technical background. With its intuitive no-code question builder, rich visualization options, and ability to write raw SQL for advanced analysis, Metabase bridges the gap between data teams and business users.

The Question builder in Metabase allows non-technical users to explore data by selecting a table, applying filters, choosing grouping dimensions, and picking aggregations through a guided interface. This natural-language-like experience enables business users to answer data questions independently without needing to learn SQL or request help from analysts. The notebook editor provides a more advanced version of this interface with support for multi-stage queries, joins, custom expressions, and result ordering.

For users who prefer SQL, the native query editor provides a full-featured SQL environment with autocomplete, syntax highlighting, a schema browser, and the ability to embed filters and date parameters. SQL queries can be saved as questions, shared with other users, and embedded in dashboards just like questions created through the visual builder.

Dashboard creation in Metabase is simple and flexible. Questions are arranged on a drag-and-drop canvas and resized to fit the desired layout. Dashboards support multiple card types including charts, tables, numbers, gauges, and maps. Dashboard filters allow viewers to interactively slice the data by date ranges, categories, and other dimensions without creating separate dashboards for each cut of the data. Dashboard subscriptions deliver scheduled email or Slack reports automatically.

Metabase connects to a wide range of data sources. Supported databases include PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQL Server, SQLite, MongoDB, Google BigQuery, Amazon Redshift, Snowflake, Databricks, ClickHouse, Presto, Druid, and many others. Multiple databases can be connected simultaneously, and Metabase can perform joins and union queries across databases from the same provider.

The collections and permissions system allows administrators to organize questions and dashboards into hierarchical folders and control access at the collection, table, and row level. This enables organizations to share relevant data broadly while restricting access to sensitive information appropriately.

Metabase's embedding capabilities allow questions and dashboards to be embedded in external applications using signed tokens or as full-featured interactive embeds. The embedding API enables developers to build white-labeled analytics features powered by Metabase into their own applications without exposing the full Metabase interface.

Data model management in Metabase allows administrators to create a semantic layer by adding table and column descriptions, defining common metrics and segments, hiding irrelevant tables and columns, and setting up relationships. This semantic layer makes the self-service experience more intuitive by presenting data in business terms rather than technical database language.

Metabase is available as a self-hosted application deployable on Docker, JVM, or cloud infrastructure, and as a fully managed cloud service. The open source community edition covers most features needed by small and medium teams, while Metabase Pro and Enterprise add SSO, audit logging, sandboxing, SCIM, and white-labeling.
