What is Segment?
Segment Connections uses sources and destinations. A source may be a website, mobile app, server library, or cloud application that supplies customer events. Destinations receive selected data for analytics, marketing, support, or storage. Tracking calls such as Identify and Track give the data a common structure, but teams must design the event schema and control where personal data goes.

Key capabilities
- Sources: collection points for website, app, server, or cloud-tool data.
- Tracking API: standard event and identity calls.
- Destinations: integrations that receive data for downstream use.
- Workspace controls: configuration of connected data flows.
Start with a tracking plan: event names, properties, identities, consent rules, and allowed destinations. Verify each integration's supported methods and connection mode before relying on it; the destination catalog is not a promise that every event reaches every tool unchanged.
Segment is a customer data collection and routing platform, not an identity and access management product. It is useful when multiple business tools need events from the same application, but it does not remove the need for consent, identity resolution design, or destination-specific validation.
Segment can reduce duplicated instrumentation when the same product event feeds several tools, provided the tracking schema is maintained. The source-to-destination model is documented in Twilio Segment's Connections guide, checked 27 September 2026. No integration count or automatic compliance claim is made.
