What is PdfCraft?
PdfCraft is an open-source, clean-room PDF workbench written in Rust. It aims to rebuild the useful offline parts of Adobe Acrobat without proprietary Adobe code. The native application can read, search, organize, combine, split, annotate and secure documents, while the same engine is available through a command-line tool, an opt-in MCP server and a Rust API.

The project is structured as focused crates for PDF objects, stream filters, encryption, page operations, fonts, comments, forms, rendering and automation. Its interface is one layer above that engine. This separation lets developers inspect documents, extract text, render pages and apply edits without driving the graphical interface.
PdfCraft runs on Windows, macOS, Linux and FreeBSD, with a WebAssembly build for the browser. It works without an account, telemetry or cloud processing. Version 0.4.0 is still a young release: the maintainers estimate that roughly half of Acrobat Pro's offline feature set is present and identify major fidelity and professional-workflow gaps. Treat it as an ambitious local workbench rather than a complete Acrobat replacement.
Key capabilities
- Native PDF reading and searchRender complex scripts, vertical CJK, colour emoji, gradients, blend modes, soft masks and optional content; search and copy text in reading order across supported layouts.
- Page organizationRotate, delete, move and insert pages, combine several documents, extract selected pages or split a file while preserving supported links, bookmarks, form fields, layers and attachments.
- Incremental and atomic savingAppend edits while retaining the original bytes, write through a temporary file and retain undo history across a save. Project checks use independent tools including qpdf and poppler.
- Security and document inspectionOpen standard-password-protected PDFs from older RC4 revisions through AES-256, respect document permissions and inspect metadata, fonts, fields, layers, attachments and encryption details.
- Comments, forms and layersReview threaded comments, fill supported interactive forms, display their generated appearances, toggle optional-content layers and open embedded attachments.
- CLI, MCP and Rust automationInspect, render, extract text, find content, edit pages, manage comments and forms, protect files and save changes through JSON-Schema-described tools shared by every automation entry point.
Local PDF review and organization
Use the desktop application for long-document reading, search, bookmarks, page thumbnails, page rearrangement and routine combination or splitting without sending documents to a cloud service.
Repeatable document pipelines
Use pdfcraft-cli for structure inspection, reading-order text extraction, rendering and page operations. Pin the PdfCraft version and validate outputs with representative documents before adding it to an unattended workflow.
Agent-assisted PDF operations
Launch the opt-in MCP server over standard input and output, restrict file access with --root and let a compatible agent invoke the same explicit tools used by the CLI. No MCP network port opens automatically.
Compatibility and robustness testing
Build a corpus that includes the fonts, forms, annotations, encryption, layers and damaged files your environment receives. Compare render output and document structure with an independent PDF tool after every material edit.
PdfCraft is positioned between a PDF viewer, an engineering toolkit and an emerging Acrobat-style editor. It is strongest for developers and privacy-sensitive teams that need local inspection, page operations and scriptable workflows across desktop platforms.
The project publishes useful corpus evidence: its maintainers report that 963 of 983 files in the pdf.js test set open and render cleanly with no crashes during that sweep, while 958 complete an open-edit-save round trip. These are project-run results, not an ITHub laboratory certification, and they do not establish parity with every production PDF.
Organizations dependent on precise editing of existing text, non-Latin OCR, Office conversion, long-term signature validation, PDF/A, PDF/X, PDF/UA preflight or XFA forms should retain a mature commercial tool. The project's roadmap says those areas remain thin or missing.
PDF automation is often split across a viewer, command-line utilities and custom scripts that do not share one editing model. PdfCraft exposes one Rust engine through a native interface, CLI, MCP server and embeddable API. A workflow can therefore begin with human review and continue through explicit, reproducible commands.
Its privacy boundary is also clear: the application requires no account and performs document work locally. The MCP server is disabled by default, runs only while launched by a client and can confine file access to a selected directory. Agent security still depends on the client, model provider and permissions granted around that server.
The main adoption risk is maturity. The maintainers state that fuzzing still finds crashes and hangs on hostile files and that rendering quality has not yet been compared side by side with Acrobat. Use disposable environments for untrusted documents, keep originals, validate signatures and encryption independently, and avoid replacing a regulated document workflow without a formal acceptance suite.
