Overview

What is Appsmith?

Appsmith is an open-source development tool for internal applications. Its documentation describes connecting data sources, building interfaces with widgets and writing queries or JavaScript for business logic. It is not itself a general-purpose database, even though applications can read from and write to databases.

Why teams use it

Key capabilities

  • Data connections: Connect an application to supported databases and APIs.
  • Interface builder: Compose screens from widgets for operational tasks.
  • Logic: Use queries and JavaScript to shape data and actions.
Core areas

Internal app development, data integration and UI composition are the product's core areas.

Positioning

Consider Appsmith for admin panels, approval screens or operational tools when a team already has data and APIs. Define access controls and query ownership before exposing production records.

Why it matters

A pilot should recreate one manual workflow and test authorization, error handling and maintenance by the team that will own it.
