What is Rancher Desktop?

Rancher Desktop combines local container management and Kubernetes in an application for Windows, macOS and Linux. The project is licensed under Apache-2.0. Users can choose Moby for Docker CLI workflows or containerd for nerdctl workflows, and select the local Kubernetes configuration.

This is a developer workstation tool, distinct from the Rancher platform used to manage Kubernetes clusters. Evaluate the local runtime and Kubernetes experience separately from any production cluster-management requirement.

Key capabilities

  • Local Kubernetes and container management.
  • Moby with Docker CLI, or containerd with nerdctl.
  • Bundled tools for common container and Kubernetes development tasks.
  • rdctl and a documented local API for configuration and automation.

Where Rancher Desktop fits

For a Docker Desktop migration, test Moby mode first if existing automation depends on Docker CLI. Record contexts and image names, back up volumes and recreate a representative Compose project. For containerd, explicitly test nerdctl commands and image visibility in the Kubernetes workflow. Validate host networking, file mounts and resource limits before changing the whole team's defaults.

Positioning and limitations

Rancher Desktop fits teams that want a graphical local container environment and local Kubernetes across supported desktop operating systems. Engine choice matters: select the runtime that matches the tools and scripts the team actually uses.

Why it matters

A shared desktop application can standardize local setup, but the container engine and Kubernetes settings still need to be documented. The rdctl interface enables automation; its documentation also flags that command names and arguments can change.
