Evaluation notes

Workload and architecture

Both platforms can receive OpenTelemetry data, but the choice of agents, SDKs and ingestion route changes the capabilities available to operators. Datadog documents feature compatibility by instrumentation setup; Dynatrace combines OpenTelemetry ingestion with OneAgent-based discovery and instrumentation. Start with the services and incident workflows that must be covered.

Use the same service, telemetry signals, sampling and retention in the trial. Confirm the Dynatrace deployment and edition: its SaaS platform and Managed documentation describe different environments, so a self-hosting flag does not establish feature parity. Compare the required integrations and operational work before discussing a commercial quote.

Criteria to verify

  • Supported application versions and Agent or OneAgent deployment
  • OpenTelemetry feature parity, metadata and duplicate-span handling
  • Logs-to-traces investigation, service context and alert routing
  • SaaS or Managed scope, residency, access controls and retention
  • Measured ingestion, cardinality and billable usage under the quoted plan

Shortlist Datadog when

Shortlist Datadog when its Agent integrations and investigation workflow cover the estate, and the team can validate the selected OpenTelemetry configuration against Datadog's feature-compatibility table.

Shortlist Dynatrace when

Shortlist Dynatrace when OneAgent's supported discovery and instrumentation fit the estate, and the team has confirmed the required OpenTelemetry, frontend-monitoring and deployment capabilities for its environment.

Proof of concept

Instrument one API and its database dependency using supported configurations, without installing competing automatic instrumentors together. Reproduce a slow request and an error, follow the trace to its logs, and trigger an alert. Compare detection delay, missing context, operator steps and recorded billable usage. Export configuration and test rollback before expanding the rollout.
