What is Tailscale?
Tailscale is a Zero Trust, identity-based connectivity platform for development, IT, and security teams. It connects remote users, devices, and services in a private network called a tailnet, with access policies for users, devices, and applications. Its documented scenarios include remote teams, multi-cloud environments, CI/CD pipelines, edge devices, and AI workloads.

Deployment starts with installing Tailscale, creating a network, and inviting users. Subnet routers extend access to services within specific subnets, while exit nodes can route internet traffic through a selected device. A client command-line interface and an API support administration and automation. The CLI is available on Linux, macOS, and Windows, but not on iOS or Android.

Identity-based private networking for remote teams, devices, and cloud workloads.
Key capabilities
- Access policies: Control access for users, devices, and applications within a tailnet.
- Traffic routing: Use subnet routers to reach services on specific subnets and exit nodes to route internet traffic.
- Service sharing: Share machines, files, and web services from devices in the network.
- Administration: Manage users, roles, devices, and network settings through documented management workflows.
- Automation: Manage aspects of the tailnet through the API, OAuth clients, webhooks, and infrastructure-as-code providers.
- Diagnostics: Use the client CLI to inspect settings, troubleshoot connectivity, and generate diagnostic reports.
Where Tailscale fits
Tailscale fits remote access workflows and environments that connect resources across cloud networks, servers, and edge devices. Development teams can use it around CI/CD infrastructure, while IT teams can manage access to internal services and shared machines.
Before deployment, teams should review access policies, subnet routing, exit-node behavior, and production security guidance. They should also check platform-specific management requirements: mobile platforms do not support the CLI, and route acceptance defaults vary by platform.
Positioning and limitations
Tailscale suits development, IT, and security teams seeking identity-based connectivity across distributed resources. Its scope includes private networking, access controls, routing, and automation. Deployment still requires decisions about access policy and network routing, and administrative capabilities differ between desktop and mobile platforms.
Connecting distributed resources is an access-management problem as well as a routing problem. Tailscale brings identity-based policies, private connectivity, and administrative automation into the same network model, allowing teams to manage access across users, devices, and workloads.
