What is MCP Slack Server?
The official MCP Slack Server lets Claude and other AI clients interact with a Slack workspace via a Slack bot token. It can list channels, read channel history, post messages, reply in threads, and list workspace users.
Read the full overview
Requires a Slack App with appropriate OAuth scopes installed in the target workspace. Useful for automating Slack communications, building AI-assisted incident response workflows, and summarizing channel activity without leaving the AI client.

Key capabilities
Channel and message access
List public and private channels (those the bot has access to), read recent message history with pagination, and retrieve thread replies. Gives the AI the context it needs to draft contextually relevant follow-ups.
Message posting
Send messages to any channel the bot is a member of, post replies to existing threads, and react to messages with emoji. All posts are sent as the bot user, not on behalf of an individual.
Where MCP Slack Server fits
Compatible with Claude Desktop, Cursor, Cline, and any MCP-compatible client. Install via npm (npx) or pip (uvx) depending on the server implementation language.
Positioning and limitations
A standard choice for teams building AI-assisted operations workflows. Pairs with GitHub and Jira MCP servers to create a full DevOps context layer where Claude can read a Slack incident thread, check the related GitHub issue, and draft a status update in one pass.
MCP servers extend AI clients beyond their training data by giving them access to live systems: local files, databases, APIs, and services. Each server adds a set of typed tools the AI can call, inspect results from, and chain into multi-step workflows, all within a single conversation context.
