What is MCP Playwright Server?
The Microsoft Playwright MCP Server brings Playwright browser automation to any MCP-compatible AI client. It supports Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit, and exposes tools for navigation, element interaction, screenshots, PDF generation, and accessibility tree inspection.
Read the full overview
Playwright MCP uses the accessibility tree as its primary interaction model, which makes it more reliable than pixel-coordinate approaches on pages with dynamic layouts. It is maintained by Microsoft alongside the Playwright testing framework.
Automate browsers with Playwright: click, fill, screenshot, test
Key capabilities
Cross-browser automation
Run against Chromium, Firefox, and WebKit from the same MCP interface. Useful for cross-browser compatibility testing and scraping tasks that require a specific engine.
Accessibility-tree interaction
Click, fill, select, and assert on elements identified by their accessibility role and name rather than CSS selectors, which produces more stable automation across page updates.
Screenshot and PDF export
Capture full-page screenshots and export pages to PDF. Both actions respect the current page state including CSS animations and viewport size.
Where MCP Playwright Server fits
Compatible with Claude Desktop, Cursor, Cline, and any MCP-compatible client. Install via npm (npx) or pip (uvx) depending on the server implementation language.
Positioning and limitations
The preferred browser automation server for teams already using Playwright for end-to-end testing. Shares driver and browser binaries with an existing Playwright installation, making it zero extra overhead to add MCP-based automation.
MCP servers extend AI clients beyond their training data by giving them access to live systems: local files, databases, APIs, and services. Each server adds a set of typed tools the AI can call, inspect results from, and chain into multi-step workflows, all within a single conversation context.
