What is MCP Git Server?
The official MCP Git Server exposes common git operations as tools an AI client can call: status, diff, log, commit, branch creation, checkout, add, and reset. It operates on repositories located on the local filesystem.
Read the full overview
Unlike the GitHub server, which talks to the GitHub API, this server talks directly to local git state. It is the right choice when you want an agent to inspect uncommitted changes, stage files, or create commits without leaving the conversation.

Key capabilities
Status and diff
Check working tree status, view staged and unstaged diffs, and read the commit log with configurable depth. Gives the AI full visibility into what has changed before it suggests or writes further edits.
Commit and branch operations
Stage files, create commits with a message, create and checkout branches, and perform soft or hard resets. Enough for a full feature-branch workflow without leaving the AI client.
Where MCP Git Server fits
Compatible with Claude Desktop, Cursor, Cline, and any MCP-compatible client. Install via npm (npx) or pip (uvx) depending on the server implementation language.
Positioning and limitations
Works alongside the Filesystem server: the AI edits files via Filesystem, then stages and commits them via Git. Combined with the GitHub server, you get end-to-end local development through to pull request in one conversation.
MCP servers extend AI clients beyond their training data by giving them access to live systems: local files, databases, APIs, and services. Each server adds a set of typed tools the AI can call, inspect results from, and chain into multi-step workflows, all within a single conversation context.
