What is MCP Docker Server?
The MCP Docker Server lets AI clients manage a local Docker daemon: list, start, stop, restart, and remove containers; pull, build, tag, and remove images; inspect logs; run one-off commands inside containers; and manage volumes and networks.
Read the full overview
It connects to the Docker socket, so it requires the Docker daemon to be running and the user account to have Docker access. Useful for DevOps workflows where Claude needs to inspect a running environment, tail logs, or restart a service without the developer switching to a terminal.

Key capabilities
Container lifecycle
List running and stopped containers, start, stop, restart, pause, and remove them. Inspect container metadata including port bindings, environment variables, and volume mounts.
Log access
Tail or fetch recent logs from any container with configurable line count. Essential for debugging where the AI needs to see error output alongside the source code it is reviewing.
Image management
List local images, pull from a registry, build from a Dockerfile path, tag, and remove images. Run one-off containers from an image and capture their output.
Where MCP Docker Server fits
Compatible with Claude Desktop, Cursor, Cline, and any MCP-compatible client. Install via npm (npx) or pip (uvx) depending on the server implementation language.
Positioning and limitations
A time-saver for backend and DevOps engineers who work with containerized development environments. Instead of alt-tabbing to a terminal for docker ps, docker logs, and docker restart, the whole workflow stays in the AI client conversation.
MCP servers extend AI clients beyond their training data by giving them access to live systems: local files, databases, APIs, and services. Each server adds a set of typed tools the AI can call, inspect results from, and chain into multi-step workflows, all within a single conversation context.
