Platform.sh is a cloud PaaS for deploying, managing, and scaling web applications with Git-driven workflows, preview environments, and multi-cloud support.
About
Platform.sh is an enterprise-grade Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) designed for deploying, managing, and scaling web applications with a Git-driven workflow. Built around the concept of infrastructure as code, Platform.sh enables development teams to define their entire infrastructure configuration in code, enabling reproducible environments, parallel preview deployments, and consistent staging and production parity.
The platform.app.yaml configuration file is the heart of every Platform.sh project. This file defines the application runtime, build commands, web routing configuration, disk mounts, and services (databases, caches, search engines) that the application requires. Because all infrastructure is defined in code and committed to the Git repository, every change to the infrastructure is tracked, reviewable, and reversible through standard Git workflows.
Environment branching is one of Platform.sh's most powerful features. When a developer creates a Git branch, Platform.sh automatically provisions a complete clone of the production environment including the application, all services, and a copy of the production data. This gives developers a realistic environment for testing changes without impacting production, and it makes code review in the context of a running application straightforward. Preview environments are accessible via unique URLs and are automatically cleaned up when branches are merged or deleted.
The services layer in Platform.sh supports a wide range of managed services including PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB, Oracle MySQL, MongoDB, Redis, RabbitMQ, Kafka, Elasticsearch, OpenSearch, Solr, InfluxDB, and Vault. All services are provisioned automatically based on the configuration file and are accessible to the application through service credentials injected as environment variables. Services are isolated and version-controlled alongside the application.
Multi-application support allows complex projects with multiple interconnected services such as a frontend application, backend API, worker processes, and administrative interfaces to be defined and deployed as a single coordinated unit. All applications within a project share the same Git-driven deployment workflow and environment branching capabilities.
Platform.sh operates across multiple cloud providers and regions, supporting AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, and OVHcloud as underlying infrastructure providers. Multi-cloud and hybrid cloud deployments allow organizations to choose the cloud infrastructure that best meets their compliance, performance, and cost requirements while maintaining a consistent application management experience.
Activity scripts and webhooks provide automation capabilities that can respond to deployment events, enabling integration with external notification systems, CI/CD pipelines, and monitoring tools. The Platform.sh CLI and management API give teams programmatic access to all platform capabilities.
Platform.sh is particularly popular among digital agencies, enterprise software teams, and organizations building complex content management deployments with Drupal, Symfony, Magento, and other enterprise PHP frameworks.
