Netlify

Netlify is a modern web development platform that pioneered the Jamstack architecture and continues to be one of the most popular choices for deploying static sites, single-page applications, and serverless functions. By providing a complete workflow from code commit to production deployment, Netlify enables frontend teams to ship faster without managing server infrastructure.

The Netlify deployment model is deeply integrated with Git. Connecting a GitHub, GitLab, or Bitbucket repository takes minutes, and from that point forward, every push to any branch triggers an automatic build and deployment. Pushes to the production branch update the live site, while other branches receive Deploy Previews, which are unique, shareable URLs for the exact state of the site on that branch. Deploy Previews enable review of changes in a production-like environment before merging, with the URL automatically posted as a GitHub or GitLab commit status.

Build configuration in Netlify is defined through a netlify.toml file committed to the repository. This file specifies the build command, publish directory, environment variables, redirect and rewrite rules, header configurations, and plugin configuration. For common frameworks like Next.js (with Netlify Next.js Runtime), Gatsby, Astro, Nuxt, Hugo, Jekyll, and others, Netlify automatically detects and configures the build without any configuration file.

Netlify Functions are AWS Lambda functions deployed alongside the website code, providing server-side compute without managing function infrastructure. They support Node.js and Go runtimes and are deployed automatically with each site deployment. Netlify Edge Functions run Deno-based code at the network edge, enabling request modification, personalization, A/B testing, and authentication at the CDN layer before responses are served to users.

The Netlify CDN distributes site content across a global network of edge locations, ensuring fast delivery to users regardless of their geographic location. Asset optimization features including automatic image compression, CSS and JavaScript minification, and HTTP/2 push improve page load performance without requiring manual optimization steps.

Forms are a first-class feature on Netlify. By adding data-netlify="true" to any HTML form, Netlify automatically captures form submissions without any server-side code. Submissions are stored in the Netlify dashboard and can trigger notifications, webhooks, and Netlify Functions, making it easy to add contact forms, newsletter signups, and other form interactions to static sites.

Identity, Split Testing, and Analytics round out the platform's core capabilities. Netlify Identity provides authentication functionality built directly into the platform. Split Testing enables traffic-based A/B testing between different Git branches. Netlify Analytics provides server-side visitor analytics that are immune to ad blockers.
