Tana is an AI-powered knowledge management tool combining notes, databases, and AI agents in a flexible, node-based workspace for advanced knowledge workers.
About
Tana is a next-generation knowledge management tool designed for power users who want the expressiveness of a database, the flexibility of a note-taking app, and the intelligence of AI, all within a single, node-based workspace. Still in active development and with a growing community of early adopters, Tana has built a passionate following among researchers, writers, and knowledge workers who want deeper capabilities than mainstream tools provide.
The fundamental data model in Tana is the node. Every piece of content, from a single sentence to a complex structured record, is a node. Nodes can contain text, other nodes (creating hierarchy), inline nodes (creating inline references), and supertags (typed attributes). This uniform model provides extraordinary flexibility, as the same primitive handles everything from simple notes to complex databases.
Supertags are Tana's most distinctive and powerful feature. A supertag is a reusable type definition that can be applied to any node, transforming it into a structured record with typed fields. Creating a supertag for a Book entity adds fields like Author, Published Date, Status, and Notes. Any node can be tagged as a Book to give it these fields. Multiple supertags can be applied to the same node, enabling flexible multi-typed classification.
The search and query capabilities in Tana are sophisticated and real-time. Search nodes can be configured with filters, field constraints, and supertag requirements that dynamically gather all matching nodes from anywhere in the workspace into a single view. This query-based aggregation enables creating personal databases that surface relevant information from scattered notes automatically.
AI integration in Tana goes beyond simple text generation. AI commands can query the workspace content, reason over connected nodes, extract structured information from unstructured text, and generate content informed by existing knowledge base content. This integration makes Tana particularly powerful for researchers and analysts who want AI to help synthesize and act on their personal knowledge base.
The daily note workflow provides a daily log page that serves as a capture point for new information, tasks, and observations, with Tana's bidirectional linking ensuring that content captured in daily notes is automatically connected to relevant topic nodes.
Positioning
Tana is an AI-native knowledge management workspace that reimagines how information is structured and connected. Built around the concept of supertags — structured node types with fields, views, and behaviors — Tana treats every piece of information as a node in a graph rather than a line in a document, enabling dynamic views, automated workflows, and relationships that traditional note-taking apps cannot express.
The platform combines the flexibility of an outliner with the power of a database, allowing users to tag any node with structure that transforms it into a queryable, viewable, and actionable object. Integrated AI capabilities help with content generation, summarization, and automatic classification, making Tana a thinking tool rather than just a storage tool.
What You Get
- Supertags
Structured node types with custom fields, default views, and inherited behaviors that turn freeform notes into queryable structured data - Live Searches
Dynamic views that pull nodes matching specific criteria across your entire workspace, creating auto-updating dashboards and filtered lists - AI Integration
Built-in AI commands for summarization, extraction, classification, and content generation that operate on your knowledge graph - Command Nodes
Automation primitives that trigger actions when nodes are created or modified, enabling workflow automation within the workspace - Graph Relationships
Bidirectional references and field-based relationships between nodes that create a connected knowledge graph navigable from any entry point
Core Areas
Personal Knowledge Management
Networked note-taking with structure that evolves organically, connecting ideas, references, and projects in a personal knowledge graph
Team Workspaces
Shared knowledge environments where team members contribute to a collective graph with role-based access and real-time collaboration
Meeting & CRM Workflows
Structured meeting notes that automatically populate contact records, action items, and project trackers through supertag relationships
Research & Analysis
Systematic capture and synthesis of information with AI-assisted summarization and pattern identification across collected sources
Why It Matters
Most knowledge tools force a choice between freeform flexibility (documents, notes) and rigid structure (databases, spreadsheets). Tana dissolves this tradeoff by letting any piece of text carry structure through supertags, which means information can be both naturally written and systematically queried without maintaining separate systems.
The AI-native approach goes beyond chatbot-style assistance — AI operates on your structured knowledge graph, which means it can classify, connect, and surface information with context that generic AI tools lack because they don't understand your personal information architecture.
