Open-source monitoring system with dimensional time-series data model, PromQL query language, and Kubernetes-native service discovery.

About Prometheus

Prometheus is an open-source systems monitoring and alerting toolkit that has become the standard for metrics collection in cloud-native environments. Originally developed at SoundCloud and now a graduated CNCF project, Prometheus uses a dimensional data model with time-series identified by metric name and key/value pairs. The platform collects metrics through a pull-based model, scraping HTTP endpoints that expose metrics in the Prometheus format. PromQL, its powerful query language, enables complex queries and aggregations across multi-dimensional data. Alertmanager handles alert routing, deduplication, and notification delivery. Prometheus has become the de facto standard for Kubernetes monitoring, with native service discovery for pods, services, and nodes. The platform integrates with Grafana for visualization and supports remote storage backends for long-term data retention.
